In the late 1960s, southern Africa was very different from today. South Africa and Southern Rhodesia(罗得西亚) ( now Zimbabwe(津巴布韦)) were both controlled by the white people living in the country. Although the majority of the people in both of these countries were black, their governments were controlled by the white minority; they were not independent. Two independent countries a little independent as well; these two countries were Tanzania and Zambia.
Zambia had very big problems importing the goods that it needed to buy. The reason was the most important railway lines ran South through Rhodesia and South Africa. Both of these countries were unfriendly to Zambia but Zambia was landlocked and had no ports. Zambia wanted a railway line that ran north through friendly Tanzania to the port of Dar es Salaam. Tanzania also wanted the railway as it would help in the development of the south of the country. Both countries wanted to build a railway line from the capital of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, to the capital of Zambia, Lusaka.

In the past, only a few specialists in a company were needed to communicate with foreign businesses. However, in these days of multinational companies, where workers are required to communicate with other employees from several countries, a common language is essential—and English has become the logical choice.
Nowadays, even blue-collar workers in many companies are required to speak English. For example, just over three years ago, a Dutch company, United Pan-European Communications (UPC), was contracted to build a TV studio in Amsterdam. The job involved many electricians—more than the company could find I the Netherlands. There were plenty of qualified electricians in nearby France and Belgium, but the American and Dutch executives of UPC wanted everyone on the job to speak and understand the same language. So, the UPC hired British electricians and flew them to Amsterdam every Monday, accommodating them in hotels all over the city, and flying them home Friday evenings.
Increasingly, workers who can speak English earn salaries 25-35% higher than those who can’t. They are also eligible for a wider range of high-level jobs.
The problem is that, while the ability to speak English is fast becoming essential for getting a good job, there is a shortage of people who can speak it. According to a recent European Commission report, only about 41% of continental Europeans can speak English, and only 29% speak it well enough to carryon a conversation. Many companies are solving this problem by setting up English language schools within the workplace. English language schools all over Europe are expanding at a huge rate, and governments are looking at ways to improve English tuition in schools.
One result of this modern urge to lean English is that a generation gap is appearing. According to a European Union study, 67% of Europeans between 15 and 24 say they can speak English while only 18% of those over 55 say they can. Increasingly, all over Europe, it is the children who are leading the parents.

(Text 1)

W: Is there anything I can do for you?

M: I’d like to borrow some books to help me improve my English. Would you mind introducing some to me?

W: Certainly. Here are all the new English stories and magazines. They are both interesting and helpful in learning English.

M: Oh, good. How many books can I borrow each time?

  W: No more than two.

M: OK. I’ll just want to borrow one story book and a magazine.

W: All right. And you can keep them for ten days.

  M: Only ten days?

W: Yes, but you can renew them for another week if you can’t finish reading them.

W: Jack, this Friday is your Dad’s 55th birthday, do you remember?

M: Of course I do. How shall we celebrate it?

W: First, we’ll have a birthday present. What about buying a nice tie?

M: That’s a good idea. He likes different colors of ties. And a big birthday cake, too, with 55 candles.

W: Good. Shall we have a special dinner?

M: Sure. How about Chinese food?

W: Fine. Where shall we have it?

M: I think we can have it at home. I’ve got a Chinese cook book and learned to cook a few dishes. I’m sure Dad will like them.

W: That’s good. Would you like me to do shopping with you?

  M: Why not. When?

  W: How about tomorrow afternoon?

M: OK. That would be fine.

Marco Polo was an Italian man, born in 1254. He was a world traveler. When he was around 16 years old, he traveled with his father and his uncle a long way from Europe to China.
After staying nearly twenty years in the East, they returned home at last. Their friends were surprised to see them again. They had been away for twenty-four years and everybody thought that they must have died a long time ago.
But Marco Polo didn’t stay at home for long. He was taken as a prisoner in a sea battle. Time passed slowly in prison. Marco Polo was not in the least lonely. Every day he told the other prisoners about his travels. The stories he told of the countries of Asia were so interesting that one of the prisoners started to put them down in a book.
In the book Marco Polo told about all the things he had seen and heard. He told of how the Chinese burned a kind of black stone for cooking, and how the heat it gave was much bigger and lasted much longer than a wood fire. People read it, but they said, “This book cannot be true.” When Marco Polo was an old man, he was ill. Some of his friends came to see him in bed. “Now tell us that your book is not true,” they said. “No,” said Marco Polo. “Everything in my book is true. I went to all those countries, and I saw all those strange things. It’s all true.” So his friends believed him. Soon his stories got around and his name is remembered to this day.

Money, that is bills and coins, may disappear some day. In many countries, people now pay for many things with credit cards. Credit cards are small plastic cards with a number on them. Each person has a different number. When you buy something you can give the clerk the card and he charges the amount on your card. At the end of the month you receive one bill for all the things you have bought using the card.
You can use credit cards in stores, hotels, restaurants. You can pay for airplane tickets, theater tickets, gasoline and flowers with credit cards. Credit cards are even smaller than money, so they are easy to carry. This system also gives you a record of the things you buy and the amount you have paid for them. The biggest problem is that sometimes you spend more than you can pay for at the end of the month.

Suppose someone on another planet invents radio and builds a very powerful broadcasting station. Suppose he wants to let us know that he exists. He could do this, even though he could not speak any of the earth’s languages. All he needs to do is to send out radio signals that can be counted in some special order.
For example,he might send out beep,beep-beep,beep-beep-beep. This would show that he could count——1,2,3. He could send 2 beeps, then 4,then 6,then 8,and so on. This would show that he can count by twos. Probably he would send much more complicated number-signals which only a scientist could recognize. Anyone who is able to invent radio must know a great deal about numbers and mathematics. Some experts feel so sure that they will sooner or later get number-messages,they have set up a project for listening on the giant radio receivers that follow rockets and satellites in space.
