Abraham Lincoln had said, “The better part of one’s life consists of his friendships.” Undoubtedly, friendship is important in our life: when we are sad, it is a dose of consolation; when we are happy, it is just like adding flowers to the embroidery. For me, it is a necessity in our happy life.
As we know, a happy life is based on love which pours in from all quarters, including from friendship. According to Fr. Jerome Cummings, friends are those who know us, and love us anyway. They share our feelings and show their concern. They create a warm and safe atmosphere like home or harbor. They may listen patiently and please us creatively when we are complaining about family trivialities. They may also go with us to come through difficulties in business. They make us feel in a group and feel ourselves part of the whole world. Though expressed in a subtle way, their love for us is strong enough to comfort us. At this, friendship warms us with love.
Friendship also delights us with laughter. Time spent with friends is always joyful. For example, it may be cheerful to celebrate with friends for promotion; it may be enjoyable to kill the dullness at weekends with friends; it may also be delightful to receive short messages about wonderful jokes from friends. Obviously, life seems to be full of laughter when we are together with friends. No wonder that friendship is said to redouble the gays. It creates a world full of pleasure for us.
Lastly, friendship stimulates us with courage. Courage is the quality on which we rely to live and to pursue achievement, and friendship is the supplier of it. In general, friends are experts in encouraging us when failure hangs over us. The friendship between Marx and Engel serves to illustrate this. It was Marx who stimulated Engel to stick to his belief and contribute his life to human service. It was Engel who plucked up Marx’s courage to continue his philosophical study in the poor economical condition. It was the friendship that inspired them to move forwards on the road of exploring and fulfilling Communism. In short, friendship brings us courage for life.
It is said that without love, life is tough; without laughter, life is dark; without courage, life is hard. As to me, without friendship, life is impossible because it provides my life with all of the three.
