We often say, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” But what is the exact meaning of friendship? No one can really offer a definite concept, because different people hold various views on friendship. Some people make friends for comforting their lonely hearts, some for sharing their feelings and some for finding partners.

Everyone has his own friendship and some have a lot of friends. But in fact, quantity is not so important as quality. The quality of friendship means loyalty, frankness and amiability.
Loyalty is the most important for friendship. No one wants to make friends with those who wiill betray them, so we should try our best to support our friends in making good decisions. If we are in opposition with them, we should express our idea straightforwardly and avoid commenting any of their shortcomings behind them. We should be loyal to our friends, and should not try to revenge them even if they betray us since that can only make things worse and we can’t maintain the friendship any more.

Frankness is the fundation of friendship. If one make friends with certain purposes, there is no doubt that the friendship will break sooner or later. We often see that some powerful person has a lot of friends around. They come to the person’s home with bags of valuable presents. But do you notice that they bow and are always smiling? Yes, they are flattering him for some purposes. After receiving enough presents, the powerful person will help them achieve thei aims. But of course, the friendship will stop there, and will go on when there is Another aim. True friends are together with pure, frank heart. They won’t tell lies or take advantage over each other, so that their friendship can last forever.

Amiability is the condition of friendship. Before knowing each other, we make friends with someone probably because he is easy going and amiable and we can get on well with him. An easy going friend always has a lot in common and can share everything with us, no matter happiness or sadness.

In a word, if we want to maintain our friendship forever, we should keep loyal, frank, and amiable. Friendship is a kind of affection together with us all our lives, so why not cherish it forever?
